Recycling Sustainability free essay sample

Recycling is a major part of our society. It is something that we as American citizens do daily without thinking twice about it. That is one of the main reasons I chose to write this paper on Recycling sustainability. The role of recycling to preserving our environment and to live in a sustainable way is a lot more important than many people think it is. One of the main reasons I chose to write this paper on recycling is because it is a major part of our everyday lives and it is something that most people and businesses do. As many people think they are helping by recycling, (do not get me wrong, it is a major help to our environment) they do not understand that it has major negative effects on the environment. Recycling is said to be the basis for sustainability. At the rate that we are consuming natural resources, and releasing harmful toxins into our air, we will eventually run out and wipe out all living beings off the face of the earth. We will write a custom essay sample on Recycling Sustainability or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page In researching this topic, I hope to find out more on all possible ways we as a community can come together and do as much as we can to limit the amount of resources we use and toxins. I hope to come up with a plan that will actually make a difference. Yes, one person recycling can help, but it is truly not enough to turn this planet around. I will also be looking into what companies like Petsmart and Disney are doing to operate their businesses in a sustainable way. The â€Å"Going Green† program is another way we can all contribute to making our environment safer and more sustainable. Although I can think of many solutions to this problem, while doing my research, I will find many cons to these solutions. I intend to find the best possible solution and explain in great detail how we can save our planet from becoming extinct, even if the best possible solution has a few negative effects, doing something to prevent our environment from a national disaster is better than doing nothing at all. Americans Cultural Practices and Social Policies (Micro- Level) Most Americans recycle every day and talk about ways to improve the environment. Most Americans are all about doing what is best for our environment and our health. I believe that it is in America’s best interest to save our planet and protect our air, which in return protects our health.

Attendance Management System for Provincial Human Essay Example

Attendance Management System for Provincial Human Essay Example Attendance Management System for Provincial Human Essay Attendance Management System for Provincial Human Essay Each trainee must have a DART (Dally Time Record) from which their time-in and time-out Is they are assigned. The office encourages each of the trainees to go to the person-in- charge once a month for them to check, validate and track their total training hours. Statement of the Problem The current process of checking the attendance and the time of the trainees is time consuming and not reliable. The manual computation of training hours is inaccurate. The records of the trainees attendance are not secured. Note: The Daily Time Record has high probability of being lost because of misplacement and unexpected natural phenomena. General Objectives: The project is aimed to design and develop Attendance Management System for PROMO On-the-Job-Trainees. Specific Objectives: Specifically this project aims to: Help the Administrator/Secretary to manage the records of the trainees effectively. Compute the total hours of training accurately. Secure the records of the trainees attendance. Significance of the Study The finished system will be beneficial to the following: Trainee they are given assurance that the attendance recorded for them is accurate because the proposed system will automatically compute their training hours. Moreover, because human intervention is eradicated, the fear of losing their Daily Time Record is got rid of. Administrator/Secretary they will not be involved anymore in the checking of the attendance. All they have to do is to validate the attendance of the trainees on the system and print the computer generated attendance report to IEEE the performance of the trainees. Scope and Limitation: The proposed system will only be for the use of the Provincial Human Resource Management Office Bombing, Uneven Vicar. The system will only support the basic information of the trainees. The system is capable of recording the attendance of the trainees and computing the total hours rendered of the trainee. Furthermore, the system is able to generate the summary of capturing the fingerprint of the trainee before and after their training which serves as their identification. However, the system is not capable of recording the trainees absences and their tardiness. CHAPTER II Reviews and Related Literature Today, there is a wide use of computers in a various application; a computation of bank statements, the use of robotics machine to speed up some factory works, enrollment and grading system in school and universities, networking and others. Man gradually realized the importance of computer to speed up communication even in remote areas and as means of transferring data for business needs. Computer can store information in a mass storage device. It can recall information in a speed of microseconds or even in nanoseconds. Therefore, man can easily retrieved stored information, change it and then store it again. Attendance Management Based from an online resource ( Weeklies. Com/what-is-attendance- management. HTML), Attendance management is a term used to describe the various managerial tools and strategies that aid in improving the regular attendance of employees. When effective, this type of attendance control helps the employer to avoid experiencing any downtime that may occur due to the absence of an employee, as well as help to prevent overloading other employees with additional tasks in order o avoid those downtime. A number of tools are used in the process of attendance management, including time clocks; employee maintained time sheets, and even time tracking software that helps to provide a snapshot of employee attendance over a specified period of time. One of the major goals of attendance management is to reduce the amount of absenteeism that occurs in the workplace. Purpose of Attendance Management The purpose of attendance management is to develop a willingness on the part of all employees to attend work regularly and to assist them in motivating their co- workers to attend work regularly. This can be done through; 1 . Addressing the physical and emotional needs of employees 2. Communicating the attendance goals of the organization so employees can understand and identify with them 3. Dealing with cases of excessive absenteeism effectively and fairly to produce deterrence. Management System Morris Slogan stated in his book Network and Distributed Systems Management that management of a system is concerned with supervising and controlling the system so that it fulfills the requirement of both the owners and users of the system. The management of the system may be performed by a mixture of human or automated components. What is Biometric? Biometrics means life measurement associated with the use of unique physiological characteristics to identify an individual. It is an authentication technique that relies on measurable physical characteristics that can be Identification based on biometric techniques obviates the need to remember a password or carry a token. A biometric system is essentially a patter n recognition system which makes a personal identification by determining the authenticity of a specific physiological or behavioral characteristic possessed by the user. Biometric cosmologies are defined as the automated methods of identifying or authenticating the identity of a living person based on a physiological characteristic. Several types of biometric identification schemes: face: the analysis of facial characteristics fingerprint: the analysis of an individuals unique fingerprints hand geometry: the analysis of the shape of the hand and the length of the fingers retina: the analysis of the capillary vessels located at the back of the eye iris: the analysis of the colored ring that surrounds the eyes pupil signature: the analysis of the way a person signs his name. In: the analysis of pattern of veins in the back if the hand and the wrist voice: the analysis of the tone, pitch, cadence and frequency of a persons voice. What is a Biometric Time and Attendance System? Biometrics is the identification of people based upon their physical characteristics; most commonly their fingerprints, hands, eyes, or facial features. While time and attendance systems are used to manage employee attendance, scheduling, and associated payroll tasks. Within time and attendance, biometric devices are often used as a punch clock in order to add an extra layer of security, accountability and efficiency. How Does Biometric Time and Attendance Software Work? Biometric Devices: Using biometric time and attendance systems allows employees to clock in and out using their fingerprint, retinal scan, etc. Often times this process is also accompanied by a PIN (Personal Identification Number) which must also match the fingerprint or other scan. Time and Attendance Software: Pairing your biometric device with a time and attendance software allows for more efficient payroll and attendance processing. Rather than spending hours adding up manually submitted clock-in and clock-out mimes, your biometric time and attendance software will allow you to automatically import data into your payroll software. This will significantly cut down on processing time and will eliminate errors derived from manually inputting information. Benefits of using Biometric Time and Attendance Software Accountability: By using a physical characteristic rather than simply using a swipe card or PIN, ensures that the employee is actually present. This avoids issues such as buddy punching, a term used to describe when other employees clock in and out for one another. Efficiency: Using a biometric time and attendance software allows or increased efficiency in multiple areas. First, employees dont have to worry about remembering to bring in a punch card or remembering a PIN, so there is less time spent on recovering lost passwords and manually inputting an employees clock-in time. Reduce errors: Time and Attendance software reduces the risk of human error and ensures and easy, impartial, and orderly approach in addressing specific needs without any confusion. Election devices may be used to control employee access to certain areas within a facility and track employee entry. Increase Productivity: Productivity increases cause the process is seamless and makes day-to-day operations more efficient and convenient. Eliminating legacy practices frees up employees time, decreases staffing overhead, and provides supervisors with timely labor data to more effectively manage their operations. Profit: A natural bi-product of increased accountability and efficiency is increased profit. By making employees more accountable to attendance times, you will increase productivity and only pay for time actually spent working. Fingerprint Biometric System Fingerprint Biometrics is a dynamic technology that provides an identification of a errors based on the acquisition and recognition of those unique patterns and ridges in a fingerprint. Standard systems are comprised of a sensor for scanning a fingerprint and a processor which stores the fingerprint database and software which compares and matches the fingerprint to the predefined database. Within the database, a fingerprint is usually matched to a reference number, or PIN number which is then matched to a persons name or account. The specific nature of todays biometric systems is associated with a specific use of the term biometrics. Biometrics is any use of biological data in technology. Biometric systems focusing exclusively on the identification of humans have become the major kind of biometric system in todays IT world. Finger Scanning Finger scanning is a biometric process; it involves the automated capture, analysis, and comparison of a specific characteristic of the human body. There are several different ways in which an instrument can bring out the details in the pattern of raised areas (called ridges) and branches (called bifurcations) in a human finger image. Biometric finger scanning offers improvements over ink-and-paper imaging. A omelet set of finger scans for a person can be easily copied, distributed, and transmitted over computer networks. In addition, computers can quickly analyze a finger scan and compare it with thousands of other finger scans, as well as with fingerprints obtained by traditional means and then digitally photographed and stored. This greatly speeds up the process of searching finger image records in criminal investigations. Fingerprint Matching A fingerprint is made of a series of ridges and furrows of the surface of the finger. The uniqueness of a fingerprint can be determined by the pattern of ridges and arrows as well as the minutiae points. Minutiae points are local ridge characteristics that occur at either a ridge bifurcation or a ridge ending. Fingerprint matching techniques: Minutiae-based techniques first find minutiae points and map their relative placement of the finger but is difficult to extract the minutiae points accurately when the fingerprint is of low quality. Correlation-based techniques require the precise location of a registration point and are affected by image translation and rotation. Large volumes of fingerprints are collected and stored every day in a wide range of applications including forensics, access control, and driver license registration. An automatic recognition of people based on fingerprints requires that the input The aim of this project is to develop a reliable attendance management system based on biometric fingerprint identification that can used to manage attendance of the trainees. The 3 Steps to Convert Decimals to Fractions (and Back)

The 3 Steps to Convert Decimals to Fractions (and Back) SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Wondering how to convert decimals to fractions? Or how to convert fractions to decimals? It’s easier than you think! Keep reading to see the steps for decimal to fraction conversions (including why you need to follow different steps if you have a repeating decimal), steps for fraction to decimal conversions, a handy chart with common decimal/fraction conversions, and tips for quickly estimating conversions. How to Convert Decimals to Fractions How do you convert a decimal to a fraction? Any decimal, even complicated-looking ones, can be converted to a fraction; you just need to follow a few steps. Below we explain how to convert both terminating decimals and repeating decimals to fractions. Converting a Terminating Decimal to a Fraction A terminating decimal is any decimal that has a finite other of digits. In other words, it has an end. Examples include .5, .234, .864721, etc. Terminating decimals are the most common decimals you’ll see and, fortunately, they are also the easiest to convert to fractions. Step 1 Write the decimal divided by one. For example, say you’re given the decimal .55.Your first step is to write out the decimal so it looks like ${.55}/{1}$. Step 2 Next, you want to multiply both the top and bottom of your new fraction by 10 for every digit to the left of the decimal point. In our example, .55 has two digits after the decimal point, so we’ll want to multiply the entire fraction by 10 x 10, or 100.Multiplying the fraction by ${100}/{100}$ gives us ${55}/{100}$. Step 3 The final step is reducing the fraction to its simplest form. The simplest form of the fraction is when the top and bottom of the fraction are the smallest whole numbers they can be. For example, the fraction ${3}/{9}$ isn’t in its simplest form because it can still be reduced down to â…“ by dividing both the top and bottom of the fraction by 3. The fraction ${55}/{100}$ can be reduced by dividing both the top and bottom of the fraction by 5, giving us ${11}/{20}$. 11 is a prime number and can’t be divided any more, so we know this is the fraction in its simplest form. The decimal .55 is equal to the fraction ${11}/{20}$. Example Convert .108 to a fraction. After putting the decimal over 1, we end up with ${.108}/{1}$. Since .108 has three digits after the decimal place, we need to multiply the entire fraction by 10 x 10 x 10, or 1000.This gives us ${108}/{1000}$. Now we need to simplify. Since 108 and 1000 are both even numbers, we know we can divide both by 2. This gives us ${54}/{500}$. These are still even numbers, so we can divide by 2 again to get ${27}/{250}$. 27 isn't a factor of 250, so the fraction can’t be reduced any more. The final answer is ${27}/{250}$. Converting a Repeating Decimal to a Fraction A repeating decimal is one that has no end. Since you can’t keep writing or typing the decimal out forever, they are often written as a string of digits rounded off (.666666667) or with a bar above the repeating digit(s) $\ov {(.6)}$. For our example, we’ll convert .6667 to a fraction. The decimal .6667 is equal to $\ov {(.6)}$, .666666667, .667, etc. They’re all just different ways to show that the decimal is actually a string of 6’s that goes on forever. Step 1 Let x equal the repeating decimal you’re trying to convert, and identify the repeating digit(s). So x=.6667 6 is the repeating digit, and the end of the decimal has been rounded up. Step 2 Multiply by whatever value of 10 you need to get the repeating digit(s) on the left side of the decimal. For .6667, we know that 6 is the repeating digit. We want that six on the left side of the decimal, which means moving the decimal place over one spot. So we multiply both sides of the equation by (10 x 1) or 10. 10x = 6.667 Note: You only want one â€Å"set† of repeating digit(s) on the left side of the decimal. In this example, with 6 as the repeating digit, you only want one 6 on the left of the decimal. If the decimal was 0.58585858, you’d only want one set of â€Å"58† on the left side. If it helps, you can picture all repeating decimals with the infinity bar over them, so .6667 would be$\ov {(.6)}$. Step 3 Next we want to get an equation where the repeating digit is just to the right of the decimal. Looking at x = .6667, we can see that the repeating digit (6) is already just to the right of the decimal, so we don’t need to do any multiplication. We’ll keep this equation as x = .6667 Step 4 Now we need to solve for xusing our two equations,x = .667 and10x = 6.667. 10x - x =6.667-.667 9x = 6 x = ${6}/{9}$ x = â…” Example Convert 1.0363636 to a fraction. This question is a bit trickier, but we’ll be doing the same steps that we did above. First, make the decimal equal to x, and determine the repeating digit(s).x = 1.0363636 and the repeating digits are 3 and 6 Next, get the repeating digits on the left side of the decimal (again, you only want one set of repeating digits on the left). This involves moving the decimal three places to the right, so both sides need to be multiplied by (10 x 3) or 1000. 1000x = 1036.363636 Now get the repeating digits to the right of the decimal. Looking at the equation x = 1.0363636, you can see that there currently is a zero between the decimal and the repeating digits. The decimal needs to be moved over one space, so both sides need to be multiplied by 10 x 1. 10x = 10.363636 Now use the two equations,1000x = 1036.363636 and10x = 10.363636,to solve for x. 1000x - 10x =1036.363636 -10.363636 990x = 1026 x = ${1026}/{990}$ Since the numerator is larger than the denominator, this is known as an irregular fraction. Sometimes you can leave the fraction as an irregular fraction, or you may be asked to convert it to a regular fraction. You can do this by subtracting 990/990 from the fraction and making it a 1 that’ll go next to the fraction. ${1026}/{990}$ - ${990}/{990}$ = 1 ${36}/{990}$ x = 1 ${36}/{990}$ ${36}/{990}$ can be simplified by dividing it by 18. x = 1 ${2}/{55}$ How to Convert Fractions to Decimals The easiest way to convert a fraction to a decimal is just to use your calculator. The line between the numerator and denominator acts as a division line, so ${7}/{29}$ equals 7 divided by 29 or .241. If you don’t have access to a calculator though, you can still convert fractions to decimals by using long division or getting the denominator to equal a multiple of 10. We explain both these methods in this section. Long Division Method Convert ${3}/{8}$ to a decimal. Here is what ${3}/{8}$ looks like worked out with long division. â…Å" converted to a decimal is .375 Denominator as a Value of 10 Method Convert ${3}/{8}$ to a decimal. Step 1 We want the denominator, in this case 8, to equal a value of 10. We can do this by multiplying the fraction by 125, giving us ${375}/{1000}$. Step 2 Next we want to get the denominator to equal 1 so we can get rid of the fraction. We’ll do this by dividing each part of the fraction by 1000, which means moving the decimal over three places to the left. This gives us ${.375}/{1}$ or just .375, which is our answer. Note that this method only works for a fraction with a denominator that can easily be multiplied to be a value of 10. However, there is a trick you can use to estimate the value of fractions you can’t convert using this method. Check out the example below. Example Convert â…” to a decimal. There is no number you can multiply 3 by to make it an exact multiple of 10, but you can get close. By multiplying â…” by ${333}/{333}$, we get ${666}/{999}$. 999 is very close to 1000, so let’s act like it actually is 1000, divide each part of the fraction by 1000, and move the decimal place of 666 three places to the left, giving us .666 The exact decimal conversion of â…” is the repeating decimal .6666667, but .666 gets us very close. So whenever you have a fraction whose denominator can’t easily be multiplied to a value of 10 (this will happen to all fractions that convert to repeating decimals), just get the denominator as close to a multiple of 10 as possible for a close estimate. Common Decimal to Fraction Conversions Below is a chart with common decimal to fraction conversions. You don’t need to memorize these, but knowing at least some of them off the top of your head will make it easy to do some common conversions. If you’re trying to convert a decimal or fraction and don’t have a calculator, you can also see which value in this chart the number is closest to so you can make an educated estimate of the conversion. Decimal Fraction 0.03125 ${1}/{32}$ 0.0625 ${1}/{16}$ 0.1 ${1}/{10}$ 0.1111 ${1}/{9}$ 0.125 ${1}/{8}$ 0.16667 ${1}/{6}$ 0.2 ${1}/{5}$ 0.2222 ${2}/{9}$ 0.25 ${1}/{4}$ 0.3 ${3}/{10}$ 0.3333 ${1}/{3}$ 0.375 ${3}/{8}$ 0.4 ${2}/{5}$ 0.4444 ${4}/{9}$ 0.5 ${1}/{2}$ 0.5555 ${5}/{9}$ 0.6 ${3}/{5}$ 0.625 ${5}/{8}$ 0.6666 ${2}/{3}$ 0.7 ${7}/{10}$ 0.75 ${3}/{4}$ 0.7777 ${7}/{9}$ 0.8 ${4}/{5}$ 0.8333 ${5}/{6}$ 0.875 ${7}/{8}$ 0.8888 ${8}/{9}$ 0.9 ${9}/{10}$ Summary: How to Make a Decimal Into a Fraction If you’re trying to convert a decimal to fraction, first you need to determine if it’s a terminal decimal (one with an end) or a repeating decimal (one with a digit or digit that repeats to infinity).Once you’ve done that, you can follow a few steps for the decimal to fraction conversion and for writing decimals as fractions. If you’re trying to convert a fraction to decimal, the easiest way is just to use your calculator. If you don’t have one handy, you can use long division or get the denominator equal to a multiple of ten, then move the decimal place of the numerator over. For quick estimates of decimal to fraction conversions (or vice versa), you can look at our chart of common conversions and see which is closest to your figure to get a ballpark idea of its conversion value. The Main Ideas of the Bush Doctrine Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

The Main Ideas of the Bush Doctrine - Essay Example The first principle relates to rejection of moral equivalency concerning international affairs, whereby the Bush Doctrine contends that there is a need for moral judgment in international affairs; In fact, the Bush Doctrine asserts that liberal democratic regimes are superior to tyrannies1. The other principle of Bush Doctrine concerns the repudiation of social work concerning the theory of terrorism, and belief of economic factors such as poverty and hunger that are regarded to be the cause of the phenomenon. In fact, Bush Doctrine is based on the assertion that terrorism led to 9/11 and precursors that were both against United States and Israel as a way of destroying western liberalism2. Moreover, this ideology is considered dangerous like fascism and communism, which prevailed during the Second World War3. Therefore, this doctrine is also considered the source of 9/11, and the aggression related to culture of tyranny that prevails in the Middle East, and generates fanatics, aggres siveness, and religious despotism. The other principle relates to recognition that after terrorism attack in September 11 conventional approaches to threats, suppression and preclusion and responses of ex post where rendered insufficient. Therefore, inadequacy prevailed in situations requiring efforts to deal with terrorism and rouge regime seeking to weapons of mass destruction. Bush Doctrine gave the rights to undertake preventive war to United States, and the international laws and norms, which embraces the right of a nation to launch strike to another nation that is imminent, hence rejecting the right of preventive war4. Bush doctrine was also considered an innovation attributed to neo-conservatism; hence, it was historical, whereby it can be described as a fusing power of America to principles that ensures the survival of principles and propagation for the benefits of the human beings. The doctrine also applies to American statecraft from the foundation of the Republic since; t he principles of America are founding and significant for determining the foreign policies in U.S.A. Nonetheless, there are implications of the argument relates to linear progression from pronouncement of sovereignty by Bush as an attempt to initiate democratization process in Iraq. Iraq War in 2003 as the ultimate test of the Doctrine in practice The war in Iraq was a definitive test for the Bush Doctrine in practice, since it was initiated through a justified invasion that was in accordance with the doctrine of â€Å"pre-emption†, which refers to prevention of terrorist attack upon America. There was an assertion that the regime in Iraq was in possession of weapons of mass destruction, which were likely to be applied in as chemical weapons, to be sold to terrorist such as al Qeada5. Nevertheless, Iraq has been a primary example of rivalry towards American as the most critical part of the world since the Gulf war, though there are efforts by Americans to alter the situation with a global strategy6. In fact, the change of Iraq regime was justified as morally and pre-emptive act aim at defending Americans, through the intention was considered geo-political, whereby controlling the most significant Arab nation and its oil resources7. This gave United States significant power as a nation and beyond other nations in Europe, central Asia and China. The other practical aspect of Bush doctrine was portrayed through neo-conservatism vision of foreign policy in

Managing Human Resources in health and social care Essay

Managing Human Resources in health and social care - Essay Example The identification of the methods to be used in the recruitment process is crucial. The selection of the target candidates to be catered, the required skills and other essentials are analysed and set accordingly. All the attributes required from the new employees must be properly evaluated and examined. The last part is to analyse the possible channels through which the candidates are to be attracted (developing the Job Positioning). The promotions and advertisement come under the job positioning. The possible channels may be newspaper ads, and other internal and external mediums are available to the organizations to advertise the job position to the target audience. The recruitment and selection policies must be designed in a way that fits the legal context (UK legislations related to the Recruitment and Planning). St. Patrick Nursing Home must ensure that the employees that are selected must know the Jon Title, Wages, Hours of Work, Holiday entitlement, Sick pay, Pension Schemes, notices and the dismissal procedures and policies. These are called the â€Å"Written Statement of Terms.† The employees must be expressed with this within two months of their job initiation. The employees must be provided with an â€Å"Itemized pay slip†. It means that the employees must be paid for the work they have done. The employee also has the right to be paid for the time he was in the workplace without any work; the employer does not provide him with work. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight :: Sir Gawain and the Green Knight

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight - lines 491-565 Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is the greatest 14th century text. The poem is made up of two stories, one (the testing at Bercilak's castle) set inside the other (the beheading of the Green Knight at the beginning and the return blow at the end). The unknown author describes in the poem adventure of the brave and courageous Sir Gawain who challenges the Green Knight. The passage that starts Part II of the poem illustrates the feast given to honor Sir Gawain for his bravery and courage after he meets the first challenge of the Green Knight. All knights present at the Round Table celebrate this great event and have a lot of fun after drinking: "Gawain was glad to begin those games in hall, /But if the end be harsher, hold it no wonder, /For though men are merry in mind after much drink" (Norton, p. 212). Furthermore, the author continues the poem by describing the seasons of the year that follow the Christmas celebration: "And so this Yule to the young year yielded place" (Norton, 212). The author clearly relates to the Christian traditions in the text. After Christmas comes, the time of Lent, a period of penance when people fast and get ready for the Easter holidays. This is also the time when everything becomes alive. Many animals wake up from the winter rest and all the plants become green. The unknown author creates for the reader a calm and easy mood while describing the seasons of spring and summer. Yet, by mentioning the green color of all plants, he reminds us about still-existing Green Knight who waits for Sir Gawain to come: "The ground and the groves wear gowns of green..." , "Glad is the green plant growing abroad, [...]" , "And the grass turns to gray, that once grew green" (Norton, 212, 213). With fall comes death, and the author tries to emphasize the fall of the Green Knight again, through the changing of the seasons The Author illustrates Gawain's bravery. Sir Gawain is ready to leave to search for the Green Knight.

Regionalism in India

On 15th of December 1953, when Potti Sriramulu succumbed to death not able to sustain 52 days of marathon fast that was undertaken to demand a separate state for Telugu speaking people, little did he realize that his death would become a launch pad for the dawn of Political Regionalism in India – that would in course of time alter the whole landscape of India. But the brand of regionalism that evolved after Potti Sriramulu’s death was legitimate, genuine and logical. It reflected the aspirations of people at that time. It stood for fulfilling the longstanding desire of people to have their own linguistic state. Thus, Andhra Pradesh became the first linguistic state of India. Today, Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh is renamed as Potti Sriramulu. After the death of Sriramulu, reluctant Nehru was forced to accede to the various cries from other parts of the country with similar demands. In 1954, a States Reorganization Committee was formed with Fazal Ali as its head, which recommended the formation of 16 new states and 3 Union Territories based on the language people spoke in those respective regions. This heralded a new phase in the Indian politics. The subsequent movements for separate states and territories gave birth to slew of regional parties which eventually became prominent in national level and thus started coalition culture in Indian politics. Regionalism: Meaning Regionalism is a feeling or an ideology among a section of people residing in a particular geographical space characterized by unique language, culture etc. that they are the sons of the soil and every opportunity that exists in their land must be accorded to them first but not to the outsiders. It is a sort of Parochialism. In most of the cases it is raised for expedient political gains but not necessarily. Growth and Development Regionalism in India can be traced back to Dravida Movement started in Tamil Nadu. The movement initially focused on empowering Dalits, non-Brahmins, and poor people. Later it turned against imposition of Hindi as sole official language on non-Hindi speaking areas. Finally, the movement for some time focused on seceding from India to carve out their own Dravidastan or Dravida Nadu. The movement slowly declined and today they have become prominent regional parties after many splits and factionalism. Throughout India regionalism persisted. In Maharashtra Shiv Sena against Kannadigas in the name of Marathi pride and recently MNS activists against Biharis; in Punjab against non-Punjabis that gave rise to Khalistan Movement and earlier Akali Movement; in Andhra, Telangana Movement with an aim of separate state; in Assam ULFA militants against migrant Biharis and Bengalis; in North-East against other Indians. It can be traced that regionalism slowly turned from non violent means to violent means to achieve their goals. From Potti Sriramulu’s non violent means of fatsing to Maharashtra Nav Nirman Sena (MNS) and ULFA’s violent means, regionalism has come a long way. Regionalism in present day India is readily used for political gains by petty politicians and secessionist organizations. Economic reasons are exploited for political dividends. When violence is used against people in the name of regionalism it is a criminal act and is punishable. Article 19 of the Constitution of India provides a citizen of India to move freely throughout the territory of India, to reside and settle in any part, and to practice any profession, or to carry on any occupation, trade or business. When ULFA (United Liberation Front of Assam) militants or MNS(Maharashtra Navnirman Sena) activists used violence against poor migrant workers, they clearly violated law of the land and also the Constitution which is above all, even above the Parliament. Do we need to fear Regionalism? No. Regionalism in India is only a short cut to attain the political ambitions by emotionally exploiting the sentiments of the people. The fear of Balkanization is void of any logic. India is bound by a common culture that has flourished on this land many thousand years ago. I may be Kannadiga or Tamil but I am an Indian first. My identity outside India is that of an Indian. The states which fought for complete independence are now part of Indian Union and they have renounced for some extent violence; they include Mizoram, Nagaland, Kashmir, Bodoland, Tamli Nadu. India is too big for these states to fight against and win. Today regional parties define how the governments are formed and conducted both at the centre and the state level. Indeed it is a good development as some political entities such as RJD, BSP, LJP, DMK, AIADMK, BJD have to some extent represented those people who were neglected in the political process for long time. As long as they thrive for regional development without discriminating against outsiders, regionalism is good for India. Every Indian is a son of this soil. A Bihari becomes Mumbaikar when a bomb explodes in Mumbai and a Mumbaikar becomes Bihari when Kosi wrecks havoc in the plains of Bihar. We are united by an idea called India and that unity is imperative if we want to do a ’Chinese’ thing in future – that of actually walking on the path to becoming a global superpower instead of daydreaming
